7:30: Meeting called to order by Kay Mciver, introduction of officers. 7:32: Welcome new residents 7:34: introduction of guest speaker Jean McCormack of CASA. Ms. McCormack begins by telling of the first recorded case of child abuse back in 1844, and that there were no child abuse laws in place, so concerned people were referred to the ASPCA for assistance. Times have changed and now groups such as CASA are in place to help abused children. In the CASA program parents are given the opportunity to have their children returned to them if they can correct their household problems within 1 year. Local judges consider CASA volunteers to be the eyes and ears of the case. CASA is always looking for volunteers in the area, all they ask is that you commit one full year to a case. Training is provided.
  • 7:43: Area representative Gail Carney is a CASA volunteer and states that she truly believes that judges pay attention to the reports given by the CASA volunteers.
  • 7:45: Ms. McCormack opens the floor for questions. Q> Is CASA in conjunction with Texas State Services? A> Yes, we work very closely with CPS and local attorneys. Q> Where is your office located? A> Conroe, 2 blocks from the courthouse. There are 59 CASA offices in the state of Texas. Q> How many volunteers work out of your Conroe office? A> Off the top of my head, I'd say a dozen or so, I do not have the exact number with me. Resident comment, Vice President Ray Penton> I have heard wonderful things about your organization through my wife who works as an occupational therapist. Response> Thank you, CASA volunteers are at times the one consistent person with a child through a court case. 7:49: Ms. McCormack is thanked for her time. 7:50: Consideration of July 21st meeting minutes, motion made to accept, motion passes and carries. 7:52: Treasurer's report given by Kay McIver 7:54: Village liaison's report given by Holly Steinke 7:56: Resident comment by Area Representative, Rita Joseph, on the huge success of National Night Out, and looks forward to participating again in the future. 7:58: Kelly Deitrich with the Park's Department shows three exhibits with options for a new parking area at Wimberly Park. One of these location options is on Wimberly Way, the second along Blair Bridge Drive, and the third on Genesee Ridge. All three would have reinforced grass rather than concrete. The price ranges from option 1 and 3 coming in at right about $2000.00, while option 2 would cost just under $10,000.00, due to drainage concerns. Q> If we chose option 3 could we look into getting a walk path? A> I will look into that and get back with you.
